Heartless bride who tried to scam wedding site jailed for five years

A bride who tried to scam wedding organisers out of at least £7,500 by lying about a trip and fall has been jailed.

Vermyttya Miller, 37, claimed she tripped on her wedding dress and suffered serious injuries in a callous attempt to swindle the $10,000 (£7,500) cancellation policy.

A court heard Miller, who is an actress, booked her reception through The Knot, a popular website, along with the policy.

And she later used bogus medical records to submit the insurance claim and received the cheque.

But she's now been jailed for five years after being convicted of felony insurance fraud .

The actress, of Glendale, California, has also been fined around $22,500 (£17,000).

The relevant State Department of Insurance told the court the medical document was doctored and also found that her medical records were fraudulent.

"Miller’s trail of fraudulent claims led straight to a five-year jail sentence after department detectives unraveled her scheme," Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara said in a statement.

"Insurance fraud is a felony with serious penalties and consequences. We are committed to uncovering fraud and working with prosecutors to bring criminals to justice."

The defendant has now been fined (CA Dept of Insurance)

The defendant's last Facebook post, published after she was sentenced, reads: "I have to go but I will knock it out and come out better and start from where I left off with filming, music and the businesses I was starting.

"Don’t be sad for me.

"God got a bigger plan for me. My plan in place will be to show my life through film to motivate others and show the timeline from making mistakes to changing my life."
