Cheshire Police said his parents have been informed.

The news prompted an influx of comments from ECHO readers who paid their own tributes to the boy and shared their condolences with his family.

Commenting on the ECHO's Facebook page, Rebekah Wilson wrote: "I can’t even get my head around how you’d begin to process this as a parent. It’s just so so sad. Poor lad. Deepest sympathies to his poor family."

Colette Leatherbarrow posted: "Awful, love and thoughts are with his family" while Raymond Wong said: "So so sad RIP young man."

Mandy Ward said: " Such tragedy, you get your child to 16, none of us know what's in store, treasure every moment. God bless this poor boy and his family."

Maureen Daley questioned how a parent could begin to process the tragedy, adding: "My heart goes out to his parents family and friends."

They were among dozens to show their support for the boy's friends and family online.

Cheshire Police said his family is being supported by specialist officers.

Superintendent Alexander McMillan said: “This appears to be a tragic accident and our thoughts are with the boy’s family at this difficult time.”

Search and rescue teams worked for hours after receiving reports a boy may have fallen into the water on Monday afternoon.

Police, fire and ambulance services were dispatched to the scene with helicopter support overhead and a dog unit present.

The A56 Sutton Causeway to Chester Road and swing bridge were sealed off while emergency services worked in the area before the body was recovered on Tuesday morning.

Anyone with any information in relation to the incident is asked to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting the crime reference number: 1041072.
