Heartfelt tributes paid to Scots 'legend' found dead in Greenock flat

Heartfelt tributes have been paid to a Scots 'legend' after his sudden death in Greenock.

Samuel Arkley was found dead within a flat on West Blackhall Street in the town on Friday morning.

Emergency services raced to the scene after the 34-year-old was discovered at around 1.20am.

Detectives were initially treating the dad-of-one's death as unexplained and a cordon remained in place along part of the street for more than 14 hours while enquiries were carried out.

Uniformed officers stood guard outside the door of a common close throughout the day and inquiries continued over the weekend before police today confirmed that there are no suspicious circumstances.

Sam's heartbroken friend posted a picture of a Motherwell FC shirt with tributes written on it from pals.

He said: "Well, I have always believed in Angels! Thank you so much to the friend who got it for me! Rest Easy Sam."

Another said: "Sam was a legend in Larkfield."

While another added: "I didn't know Sam or his family, I'm only in Larkfield a couple of years and I can say I feel his loss amongst my friends and neighbours here. Thoughts and prayers to all his family and friends and may he dance in the sky forever with the best."

Another friend said: "R.I.P. Sam, so so sad. My prayers and thoughts are with all the family, he definitely was a wee legend. He'll never be forgotten."

And another said: "R.I.P Sam gbnf, fly high, thinking of his family at this very sad time."

A Police Scotland spokesperson told the Record: "Officers were called to an address at West Blackhall Street in Greenock at around 1.20am on Friday, 8 January, 2021 following the sudden death of a 34-year-old man.

"The death is currently being treated as unexplained and inquiries are ongoing.

"A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."

They later added: "The death of the 34-year-old man is not being treated as suspicious."
