Heartfelt tributes paid to community activist who passed away yesterday in Derry

Tributes have been paid to a much-respected and liked local community activist who died this week.

Brian McMenamin, the former leader in charge of Long Tower Youth Club in Derry, was involved with the organisation for over 40 years.

Paying tribute to him, the community centre said Mr McMenamin, who was in his 70s, “enriched so many lives” and would be “sadly missed” by everyone who knew him.

The community worker, who was originally from the Waterside area, also played a key role in sports in the city, especially athletics.

A spokesperson for Long Tower Youth Club said: “The staff and management of the Long Tower Youth and Community Centre are deeply saddened and shocked to learn of the passing of our esteemed former Leader in Charge and present Treasurer Brian McMenamin. We would like to pass on our sincere condolences to his family at this time.

“Forty years of Brian’s life was dedicated to the development of Long Tower YC and doing everything in his power to support and enrich our young people, families and community.

“When his time came to pass the baton over as Leader in Charge, he took up the position of Treasurer on the Management Committee where his knowledge, wisdom and passion for the club and community were invaluable.

“Brian was a man who enriched so many lives and one who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.”

Sinn Fein MLA Karen Mullan also paid homage to Brian, she said: “Brian was synonymous with the Long Tower Youth and Community Centre for forty years and was dedicated to helping and supporting young people and the local community.

“I knew Brian from attending the club myself and later through working with him and his commitment, dedication and enthusiasm shone through in everything he did.

“He will be sadly missed by all who remember him from the club and all those who worked with him and whom he helped over the years.

“My thoughts and sympathies are with his family, friends, loved ones and all associated with the Long Tower Youth and Community Centre.”
