Heartfelt tributes paid as Co Mayo crash victim named locally as GAA stalwart Gerry O'Hora

Tributes have been paid to a GAA stalwart killed in a crash in Ballina, Co Mayo on Tuesday.

Gerry O'Hara, 60s, died when his car crashed at 10:30am at Creggs Road, the Quay.

Locals have paid tribute to the well-liked man who was an avid GAA supporter.

His club Ballina Stephenites said in a statement: "Ballina Stephenites GAA Club extends its sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Gerry O'Hora, especially his wife Teresa and sons Sean and Matthew.

"Brothers and sisters, Maureen, Frank, Doris, Breda, Brendan, Raymond, Kieran, Vincent, Seamus, Christopher, Damien and Valentine.

"Gerry was a true GAA Man, and avid Mayo supporter, however his first love was his Club na Stiofanaigh. We will all miss his sideline support and attendance at every match be it underage, Minor, Junior, or Senior teams, supporting all.

"May His Gentle Soul Rest In Peace.

"Funeral will arrive to St. Muredach`s Cathedral, Ballina on Friday for Requiem Mass at 12.30pm with burial afterwards in Leigue Cemetery. Mass can be viewed live @ ballinaparish.org

"Due to current Government and HSE guidelines Gerard`s funeral mass will be private to family only."

Gardai are still appealing for anyone, whether they be a pedestrian or someone who may have dashcam footage of the crash, to come forward.

A spokesman said: "Gardaí are currently at the scene of a fatal road traffic collision involving a single car that occurred at approximately 10:30am on Tuesday June 2nd 2020 at Creggs Road, The Quay, Ballina, Co. Mayo.

"The driver of the vehicle, a man in his 60’s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"His body was removed to Mayo General Hospital where a post mortem will be conducted. The local coroner has been notified.

"No other injuries were reported. Road diversions are currently in place. The services of Forensic Collision Investigators have been requested at the scene.
