Heartfelt message from firefighters defending animal shelter

A touching note has been left by Queensland firefighters after they helped defend an animal rehoming centre between Logan and the Gold Coast from bushfire.

Crews were battling the large blaze south of Brisbane on Thursday afternoon, but the dogs — and even a cow — at the Animal Welfare League Queensland's rehoming centres were close to the fire zone.

But firefighters from Birnam Rural Fire Brigade stayed until 1:00am to ensure the fire didn't spread to the property, even leaving a note to say how "well behaved" the pups were.

"We also told all the dogs that we were here to keep them safe," the note read.

"They are all very well behaved and listened as they stopped barking after we told them they were safe."

The blaze in Stapylton broke out around 2:00pm but was under control later in the day.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Service said the fire was still burning on Saturday morning, but it was within containment lines and posing no threat to property.

The animal welfare charity, which is hosting its Christmas adoption drive this weekend, added in a post on social media that they would "be in touch" with the firefighters to show their gratitude.

"Your kindness was beyond words. We cannot thank you enough and would love to visit you to thank you in person," the post read.

It is not the only kind message shared between emergency service workers and the residents they have been helping across the country as the horror summer fire season continues.

A note from a family in New South Wales generated a lot of reaction on social media, after they left detailed instructions to help firefighters find water, fuel and even food, ending with: "You guys rock our world. Be safe."

Many more businesses offered free food and coffee — even a pub in Yeppoon that offered a free beer for firefighters after a devastating blaze ripped through the region.
