'Heartbroken' Vicky Phelan pays tribute to brave 'warrior' Tracey Brennan who campaigned for cervical cancer drug

Campaigner Vicky Phelan has paid tribute to a brave woman who campaigned with her for equal access to a new drug for cervical cancer patients.

Roscommon native Tracey Brennan passed away last Friday following a battle with cancer.

The mother of one was diagnosed with Stage 2 cervical cancer in 2017 following a smear test and suffered a relapse last year.

She campaigned alongside fellow cancer sufferers Vicky and Aine Morgan for the Pembrolizumab drug to be introduced for Irish cervical cancer patients

She is survived by her husband Aidan, son Evan, parents and siblings.

Taking to Twitter, Vicky wrote: "I was utterly heartbroken to hear this news on Friday. RIP Tracey Brennan: friend, fellow cervical cancer warrior and campaigner.

Another Twitter user replied writing: "Oh this is devastating news. I met Tracey during her treatment. She was one of those people you never forget."

Vicky responded saying: "She certainly was."

The Marie Keating Foundation also shared a tribute, saying: "Such a brave woman who campaigned on behalf of all women with cervical cancer for equal access to treatment.

"Our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends. RIP."

A death notice on RIP.ie reads: "Surrounded by her loving family, after a battle bravely fought. Much loved wife of Aidan and adoring mother to Evan.

"She will be very sadly missed by her heartbroken family, parents Pauline and M.J., sisters Amanda, Emma and Laura, brothers Michael and Tommie, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, niece, nephew, relatives, extended family, neighbours and many friends."

Locals shared poignant tributes on Facebook, with one woman writing: "To a fighter for everyone we love and respect you for all you did! Rest In Peace Tracey".

Another added: "God rest your gentle soul, Tracey. Deepest condolences to your family."

Ms Brennan's wake was held yesterday at her home in Grange, Fourmilehouse.

Her funeral will take place today in St Patrick’s Church, Cloverhill arriving for Mass of the Resurrection at 12pm.

Her family have requested their house private on Monday morning.

She will be laid to rest afterwards in Ballinderry Cemetery. Family flowers only please, donations if desired, may be made to Roscommon Palliative Care.
