Heartbroken son urges 'keep your loved ones safe, Covid-19 is no joke' after carer mum found dead

The son of a selfless carer worker found dead at her home warned "Covid-19 isn't a joke".

Heartbroken Alex Fernie said hero "doesn't quite cut it" when describing Jeanette McKenna, who delighted thousands with a video of her dancing with 102-year-old Percy Mann shortly before she passed away.

The 53-year-old died at home in Barrhead on May 7.

Just weeks earlier Whitecraigs care home in Thornliebank published a TikTok video of Jeanette and a colleague dancing with resident Percy, the Daily Record reports.

In an emotional Facebook post, Alex explained: "Here's my wee mum on the right dancing away not too long ago, doing what she loved.

"She gave her life to protect others and pretty much that was my mum in a nutshell, as long as you're okay she's okay. Selfless in every way.

"Hero for me doesn't quite cut it, my mum was an absolute angel.

"This Covid-19 isn't a joke, please take it more seriously or it could be your loved one.

"Keep all your loved ones safe life's too short, it really is.

"I will always miss you mum, always love you and forever in my memories as the best person I've known. RIP mum, I love you."

The cause of Jeanette's death is still unknown, but her landlord Barrhead Housing Association have since carried out a deep clean at the property.

Neighbours were also advised to seek medical advice.

Jeanette had been a popular member of staff at Whitecraigs for 10 years and her passing has devastated her residents and colleagues.

A spokesman said: "We are deeply shocked and saddened at this tragic news.

"Jeanette was a hugely popular carer, colleague and friend for the past 10 years.

"She was absolutely selfless and gave love and support to all residents and families within her care.

"She will be greatly missed by everyone at Whitecraigs.

"Our heartfelt condolences are with her family, friends and loved ones at this difficult time."

Shirley Robison, BHA chief executive, said: "The situation at this address is absolutely tragic and we would always encourage all our tenants and residents to seek medical help if unwell.

"Phoning NHS 111 is recommended by the Scottish Government and NHS services since the coronavirus started.

"We would like to offer our condolences to the family.

"We will follow all health and safety guidance to deal with the property clearance and to reassure neighbouring residents that this will be a co-ordinated approach using a range of contractors, including our close cleaning contractor."
