Heartbroken Shane Filan holds back tears as he carries mum Mae's coffin at her funeral in Sligo

Heartbroken Shane Filan held back tears as he carried his mother's coffin at her funeral today.

The singer's mum Mae died peacefully on Sunday afternoon after a brief illness, surrounded by Shane, her husband Peter and the rest of her loved ones.

She had been cared for in the North West Hospice in Co Sligo .

Her remains lay in repose at the family home in Carrowroe on Sunday and the funeral mass was held at noon in St Anne’s Church in Sligo today.

The star was joined at the mass by his Westlife bandmates Nicky Byrne and Kian Egan, as well as Kian's wife Jodi Albert.

Shane was supported by his wife Gillian at the funeral and the pair shared a kiss at one stage.

He said yesterday that Sunday was the "saddest day" of his life.

Shane was incredibly close to his mum and often talked fondly about her impact on his career and life.

As well as being a confidante to the singer, she was a doting grandmother to Shane and Gillian’s children Nicole, 14, Patrick, 11, and nine-year-old Shane Jnr.

Shane posted on social media on Monday morning: ""Yesterday, Sunday 15th of December, was the saddest day of my life. My mother Mae who was an incredible, beautiful woman, wife, mother, grandmother and friend passed away peacefully surrounded by all her family.

"I'd like to say thank you to everyone for all your well wishes at this time.

"To all the fans for all your support and lovely messages, thank you.

"Her funeral is a very private time for me and my family to grieve and I know you all understand and will respect that."

He added that if anyone would like to do something in his mum's memory, they can make a small donation to the North West Hospice "who looked after her so beautifully".
