'Heartbroken' restaurant to close until Covid rules allow them to 'trade properly'

A popular Dublin restaurant will be closing their doors on Christmas Eve until February or whenever the Covid-19 rules allow them to "trade properly".

Taoiseach Micheal Martin announced on Friday that pubs and restaurants must shut their doors from 8pm starting on Monday.

There should be no indoor events after 8pm and for indoor events scheduled earlier in the day, attendance should be limited to 50% of venue capacity or 1,000 people, whichever is lower.

Hugo's restaurant on Merrion Row right beside St Stephen's Green has taken action and announced they will be shutting their doors until the restrictions are eased.

The wine bar wrote in a social media post: "Devastated to have made the very difficult decision to close our beloved Hugo’s after lunch on Xmas Eve until February, OR when restrictions are lifted & we can trade properly.

"The entire broken-hearted Hugo’s family want to thank you for your overwhelming support."

Fans of the restaurant flooded the comments section with condolences.

One wrote: "Sorry to read this. So many livelihoods lost due to decisions by very well off people."

Another Twitter user wrote: "So sorry to hear. See you in February if not before then."

A third said: "That is the saddest thing. Hope you and your fantastic team will be back to light up Merrion Row in the very near future. Enjoy the festive break. Miss ye."
