Heartbroken Paul Young opens up about losing wife Stacey one year after death

Paul Young has opened up about the heartache he went through while his wife Stacey was sick.

One year on from her tragic death after a battle with brain cancer, the singer says it's his love of music that kept him going throughout the difficult time.

While Stacey was battling with her illness, Paul says he threw himself into his work, with her encouragement.

And it was concentrating on work that helped him get through the difficult time.

The 63-year-old told the Daily Mail : "Emotionally you're all over the place. But I decided, 'I have to go out on the road, I’ve got to earn money because I don’t know what I’m going to have to pay for, I don’t know what’s ahead of me'."

Stacey died at the age of 52 in January 2018 after a battle with brain cancer.

Paul and Stacey met in 1983.

She was a model who appeared in his music video for single Come Back And Stay.

They married in 1987 and went on to have three children together. Levi is now 32, Layla is 25 and Grady is 23.

They had split in 2006, but didn't divorce, and got back together in 2013, with Paul becoming stepdad to Stacey's fourth child, Jude, now 12, who she had with businessman Ilan Slazenger.

Paul described them as a "close, happy, blended family".

The couple had been married for 30 years when Stacey revealed her devastating diagnosis.

Paul also talked about his career, including a long-lasting rumour about his part in the famous Band Aid hit Do They Know It's Christmas, released in 1984.

The singer, formerly the frontman of band Kat Kool & the Kool Cats, admits he's been asked a number of times over the years whether his opening line from the song was actually intended for David Bowie.

He said he always thought that WAS the case, until he asked writers Bob Geldof and Midge Ure.

Paul said Bob told him the rumour wasn't true.

"Then I toured with Midge Ure last year in America," he added. "So, I got to ask him how it happened. I said, 'Look, people keep asking me about the Bowie thing'. Midge said, 'We tried it out with three or four different people, but then we chose you'."

And while many stars from his generation have given up the booze, including Midge, Paul Weller and Elvis Costello, Paul admitted he still enjoys the odd tipple.

He said: "I haven’t stopped at all. I don’t get drunk any more but drinking is still a part of my life. I’ve a big weakness for a good red wine. But half a bottle is fine. Or maybe two-thirds."
