Heartbroken mum wins five-year battle for speed cameras on busy Swansea road where boy racers killed her daughter

A devastated mum who lost her "beautiful" 25-year-old daughter in a car crash says she's "relieved" speed cameras and a 40mph speed limit have been introduced on the road where her daughter died.

Tracey Kennedy from Swansea had been campaigning for the reduced speed limit on the A4067 between Ynystawe roundabout and Pontardawe ever since her daughter Kelly Kennedy died in a head-on collision on the road five years ago.

Kelly was driving home from work on July 4, 2016 when she was hit head-on by fellow motorist Liam Price, causing a "huge impact" that killed her instantly. He had been racing another motorist, Cory Kedward, at the time.

It's understood Liam Price and Cory Kedward had been driving "side-by-side" at speeds of up to 90mph - well over the 60mph limit.

But thanks to Tracey Kennedy's campaign to reduce the speed limit, the speed limit on the road is now capped at 40mph, whilst average speed cameras are being introduced to further encourage motorists to follow the speed restrictions.

Tracey said: "Nothing will bring my beautiful daughter back, but if I can save another life and another family from being destroyed then it's been worth the fight.

"I've begged for five years to have speed cameras put on this stretch of road. There have been so many near-fatal accidents.

"I was told by a motorcyclist that that road was known as 'the 90mph stretch' and a place for people racing in their cars.

"I feel so relieved knowing that speed cameras are finally going to be put up. It's been a really hard fight but I did it for my daughter, Kelly."

In April 2018, Liam Price of Western Avenue, Sandfields, Port Talbot, was sentenced to six years and four months after admitting causing Miss Kennedy's death by dangerous driving, whilst Cory Kedward of Gelligaled Road, Ystrad, was convicted of the same offence following a trial and was jailed for seven years.

Tracey, who works in a nursery, added: "Our beautiful daughter lost her life because those men had absolutely no regard for life.

"The pair of them completely destroyed our family. I lost my only daughter and my best friend that day."

"Christmas is such a hard time for us because Kelly loved Christmas so much. I always buy her a present," she added. "I've put up a sparkly mannequin Christmas tree for her. She was so beautiful and elegant and I know she would love it.

"I finally have some peace at last knowing those speed cameras and speed limits will stop people racing up that road.

"Hopefully other parents won't have to suffer the horrific loss that our family has."

Paulette Smith, Swansea Council councillor for Clydach ward, added: "It [the speed limit] has been desperately needed for a quite a number of years. I'm very supportive. It is a dangerous stretch of road."
