Heartbroken mum of Aberdeen fan who died in window fall asks fans to join tribute at game on 26th birthday

The heartbroken mum of a Scots football fan who tragically died after falling from a window has urged supporters to give a one-minute applause on what would have been her 'beautiful' boy's 26th birthday.

Aberdeen-fan Greg McKay died after a fall from a flat window in the city in May last year.

His body was found outside a property on Summerfield Terrace in the Granite City at around 10.10pm on Tuesday, May 12.

Emergency crews raced to the street in an attempt to save the 24-year-old’s life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tragedy devastated Dons supporters with Greg's funeral cortege passing Pittodrie where hundreds gathered to pay their respects.

Greg's gravestone contains the club's badge emblazoned on it and the words 'stand free'.

Aberdeen face Azerbaijani side Quarabag in a crucial European tie on Thursday with a capacity crowd expected at the historic stadium.

Greg's mum Karen has asked supporters to give a minute's applause for Greg on the 26th minute to mark what would have been his 26th birthday.

In an emotional post on social media, Karen wrote that 'gorgeous Greg' loved the big nights at Pittodrie and urged supporters to clap in his memory.

She wrote:" Ok I'm crying. Amazing Aberdeen FC! 26th August! My beautiful boys 26th birthday! And the 2nd leg of our European journey.

"Not quite sure if I'm ready to be there yet but would love to see a full capacity at Pittodrie and on the 26th minute a minutes applause for our gorgeous Greg."

She has continued to remind people of the plan with a second post reading: "Looking like a capacity crowd on Thursday which means a great atmosphere, just how my boy loved it. Please keep sharing.

"Minutes applause on the 26th minute in memory of Greg McKay on his 26th Birthday. "

The social media post has been shared more than 500 times to spread awareness and many have said they will raise the roof in honour of Greg.

Chris Chalmers wrote: "So sad, looked like he had a great zest for life!"

Kim Robertson wrote: "Shared and hubby will be applauding for Greg."

Breeta Pawson wrote: "Even though I am a Rangers fan I think Greg and I would beg to differ there I will be cheering Aberdeen on

Following his death tributes poured out of the Granite City for 'one of a kind' Greg.

His devoted girlfriend Bethany Burgess posted a moving tribute to her “best friend”.

She said: “Words can't even begin to describe how heartbroken I feel right now. Still doesn't feel real.

“Wish this was just a horrible dream and I could wake up and turn round and squeeze you.

"You made me the happiest I've ever felt and my family all adored you- as did everyone who knew you."
