Heartbroken Joe Calzaghe announces death of his mother, just 16 months after losing dad Enzo

Welsh boxing legend Joe Calzaghe has announced his mother Jacqueline has died.

Calzaghe, now 47, revealed the news on social media on Friday, paying tribute to the "rock of the family" and an "amazing mum, wife and nan".

It comes just over a year since Joe's father, Enzo Calzaghe, died aged 69.

The couple had three children, Joe and his two sisters, Sonia and Melissa.

Sharing several family photographs on Instagram, Calzaghe wrote: "My beautiful mum. I love you so much and I can’t believe that you are gone.

"Thank you for always being there and looking after me and believing in me always even when times were tough. You were the rock of the family and an amazing mum, wife and nan.

"I miss you so much already and this is going to be my toughest fight I’ve fought but I know you’re with your soul mate, Dad in heaven now which gives me strength.

"Bless you my dear angel mum I love you always and forever..."

In October 2018, the family confirmed legendary boxing figure Enzo had passed away. The Italian-born coach led his son through his glittering 46-fight career that saw him win the WBO, WBC and WBA super-middleweight crowns, after training from Newbridge Boxing Club.

He coached other big names in the sport including Enzo Maccarinelli and Gavin Rees during his long career as a corner man.
