Heartbroken honeymooners left feeling sick after Mexico red list move ends dream trip

One honeymoon couple had to scrap their trip three days in to a fortnight holiday.

Martin Macdonald and his wife-to-be Caroline Macintyre have had their wedding delayed due to Covid but had gone ahead with their dream trip to Mexico.

They were last night flying on one of British Airways' last few flights home before the Sunday cut off point.

They have had to fork out an extra £2,600 for flights to get them home to Fort William in Scotland.

Caroline, 45, who works as a carer, told the Mirror: "We we're by the pool when we found out.

"I felt sick. It is heartbreaking.

"I went straight in to get in to BA to change our flights.

"I've never been to Mexico and I was so looking forward to it.

"There's no common sense in how they decide this. It's normally Monday it changes but they even did that early.

Karen said: "It's shocking that we don't know the criteria why countries are put on the Red List.

"We we're just very very luck we could transfer our flight.

"It nearly cost us around £6,000 to go in to quarantine and we really wouldn't be able to afford that."

Robert Stephens, 72, from Glasgow, said: "I feel sorry for those who were flying out on the day this was announced.

"The Government must have known this was coming and they could have told BA.

"People have spent £6,000 or £7,000 on these holidays.

"These hotels they are using to quarantine people in must be taking it in."

They had travelled to Cancun to see their son who lives there.

Tony, 69, from Liverpool, said: "It's all been a bit much.

"We hadn't seen my son for a year and he's had a grandson who we hadn't seen.

"I looked the other day and there were 20,000 cases in Mexico and 22,000 in the UK. I don't know what the rationale is for this change, or even whether there is a rationale.

"We're still not sure whether we will be getting the flight to Miami or whether BA have got us on another direct flight.
"It's shocking the lack of notice you get."
