Heartbroken girlfriend of young soldier killed in M74 smash reveals he tried to save her

The devastated girlfriend of a Scots soldier killed in a horror crash on the M74 said he tried to protect her in his final moments.

Tributes paid to young Scots soldier who died in horror crash on M74 , 22, died in the one-vehicle collision on the southbound carriageway of the A74(M), near Ecclefechan in Dumfries and Galloway, shortly after 9pm on May 1.

Girlfriend Kirsty Young, from Moffat, was a passenger in the car but says the squaddie tried to protect her by throwing his arms around her in the smash.

She was then treated for non life-threatening injuries at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

The 19-year-old has now heartbreakingly paid tribute to the "beautiful soul".

Speaking on Facebook, she said: "Writing this has to be the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life.

"I lost not only my boyfriend but my best friend. I know we went through tough times but we always made it through together.

"You were and still are my everything I have no idea what I’m going to do without you sweetheart.

"I love you so much and will never stop! You were one of a kind you really were and everyone knows it!

"I cannot believe this is happening and especially to such a beautiful soul.

"You literally went with your arms around me trying to protect me and I cannot stress enough how much I’m hurting for you right now

"You will be missed by everyone."

His heartbroken friends and family have also paid tribute to the 'beautiful' serving soldier from Eastriggs, near Annan.

Sister Amy McLaren said: "My beautiful brother, I miss you so so much."

Aunt Kirsty Marshall said: "My handsome nephew, we love you Craig."

Aunt Karen Smith wrote: "My beautiful Nephew gone too soon, fly high with the angels darling."

Rachel Agnes Roan said: "RIP Craig i cant believe your gone. Me and my family will think of you. Thank you for being there for my brother in the army, its heartbreaking."

An 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl were also taken to hospital where they are being treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries.

A Police Scotland spokeperson said: "Enquiries into the cause of the collision are still ongoing and the Procurator Fiscal has been informed."
