Heartbroken friends raise funds in memory of Newcastle East End FC coach John Paul Couley

Friends and loved ones of a much-loved football coach are helping to raise money to support his family following his sudden death.

John Paul Couley, a popular and respected coach at Newcastle East End FC (NEEFC), died unexpectedly last week, leaving his family and community in shock.

Numerous tributes have since been paid to the 40-year-old dad-of-two, from Walker , who was known for his hard work and commitment as a football coach.

Now his colleagues at Newcastle East End are helping to raise funds in his honour.

They have organised a John Paul Couley Charity Cup match on May 26, which will be played between the coaches of NEEFC and Benfield.

Kelly Scott, NEEFC chairman, said: "Everyone is still in shock but we just want to do something positive in memory of John Paul.

"We have organised a match between the coaches of NEEFC and Benfield, and there will also be other fundraising activities taking place on the day, including bucket collections.

"People are welcome to come along and support us. All the money raised will go to John Paul's family."

Kick off will be at 11am at the club's Swans Recreation Ground, in Eastfield Avenue, Walkergate .

In addition, a JustGiving page has been started online to raise cash.

It says: "This page has been set up to give John Paul the send off he deserves and to help his family who he loved dearly at this very difficult time.

"Any donations are welcome no matter how small."

Meanwhile, tributes to John Paul continue to pour in and a number of football clubs across the region have left messages on social media.

Newcastle Elite Ac said on Twitter: "Our thoughts and prayers today go to his family and friends at this difficult time. A fantastic man who will be hugely missed."

On Saturday, a minute's silence was held in his honour at NEEFC's Under 12 boys and Under 12 girls match. Other clubs also held similar tributes.
