Heartbroken friends pay tribute to ‘beautiful angel’ Anya Buckley who died of a suspected drug overdose at Leeds Festival

Heartbroken pals of a teenage festivalgoer who died following a suspected drugs overdose have paid tribute to the ‘beautiful angel’.

Seventeen-year-old Anya Buckley, from Oldham, passed away at Leeds Festival in the early hours of last Saturday morning (August 24).

Police were called to the festival site at Bramham Park site following a report that a girl had died shortly after 3.40am.

A 17-year-old boy, also from Oldham, who was arrested on suspicion of supplying controlled drugs has since been released under investigation.

Friends of the teenager have been paying tribute to her on social media, Leeds Live reports .

In an emotional post on Twitter, Alexandra Lovatt wrote: “Anya I would do anything just to speak to you one last time.

"I don't understand how something so horrible could happen to the most kindest and loving person I've met.

"I'm so grateful I had you in my life, so many people loved you and I wish you could see that. Fly high Anya. Love you forever and always. RIP beautiful."

Jessica McDermott also tweeted about her friend writing: "Rest in peace, my beautiful angel. What I would do to see you one last time."

While Charley Ward added: "Rest in peace gorgeous girl. I can't even describe how heartbroken I am right now. A precious life taken too soon."

Leeds Festival bosses described Anya’s death as a tragedy.

stival Republic director Melvin Benn said: "To say we are deeply saddened about this tragedy is an understatement.

"The West Yorkshire Police have taken action against those that may have supplied the drugs, and we will continue to work with them as usual."

A post mortem examination is due to take place this week and the exact cause of Anya’s death is not yet known.

Earlier this week Leeds Festival’s Police Commander, Superintendent Matt Davison said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the girl who has died. We have family liaison officers in place supporting them and they have asked that their privacy is respected at this extremely difficult time.

“While the exact cause of her death is yet to be established, the information we have indicates that she has taken a combination of drugs.

“This is a tragic incident and I hope serves as a timely reminder to others of the risk of taking illegal substances, particularly when mixing different types of drugs and drinking alcohol.”

Anya’s death comes as another man collapsed and died at Leeds Festival’s sister event, Reading Festival.

The festival goer collapsed near to a stage at Reading just before 11pm on Saturday.

His death is currently being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.
