Heartbroken family pay tribute to 'well-loved' grandfather killed in crash on Northumberland road

Two men lost their lives after a motorcycle and car crashed head-on in Northumberland, an inquest heard.

The collision took place on the Prudhoe Bypass section of the A695 shortly before noon on October 6 last year.

Brian Wilson, 61, of Crawcrook , who was riding the motorbike, and Albert Mitchinson, 90, of Ryton , who was driving a Honda Jazz, both died after suffering extensive injuries.

At an inquest held in Hebburn, it was said that Mr Wilson, who had been travelling west, had alcohol in his system.

Tests found that he was three times over the legal drink-drive limit.

Coroner Terence Carney, recording a "narrative" ruling, said: "On Saturday, 6 October, 2018, a road traffic collision occurred on the A695 near Prudhoe.

"A motorcycle ridden by Brian Robert Wilson was travelling west on the A695 and has crossed into the eastbound carriageway, where it has collided head-on with a Honda Jazz that was being driven eastbound by Albert Mitchinson.

"Brian Robert Wilson suffered catastrophic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Albert Mitchinson survived the collision but was trapped in his vehicle. He had suffered extensive injuries as a result of the collision.

"Emergency services attended and released him from the vehicle.

"He was conveyed to the Royal Victoria Infirmary but suffered a cardiac arrest due to his injuries and was confirmed dead at the RVI."

He further concluded that Mr Wilson's cause of death was "catastrophic injuries sustained in a road traffic collision".

For Mr Mitchinson, the coroner ruled he died from "extensive injuries and trauma sustained as the victim of a road traffic collision".

After the hearing, Mr Mitchinson's family paid tribute to the well-loved grandfather and said that, despite being 90 years old, he was a competent driver.

His brother, who had been in the front passenger seat of the car, was also injured in the crash and was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries.

Mr Mitchinson's son Paul said: "My dad was a very competent driver, very alert and aware.

"He had been driving for many years, he used to go all over the country. He often went to Yorkshire or the Lakes with my uncles and he did all the driving.

"On that particular day, my dad had been shopping. He was doing nothing wrong. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time."

He said Mr Mitchinson was sorely missed by the whole family.

He added: "He was a very active gentleman. He loved gardening and was always doing odd jobs for people. He would do anything for anybody. He is very greatly missed."
