'Heartbroken' family pay tribute to 'true gem' Glasgow man after tragic house fire death

A Glasgow man who died tragically in a house fire has been hailed 'the most selfless guy in the world' by his devastated family.

Emergency services raced to the Milton area of the city to tackle a house fire on Cathay Street at around 1am yesterday morning.

A 64-year-old man died in the blaze despite the efforts of rescuers.

He has now been named locally as David 'Davy' Oates and was described by heartbroken family as a 'gem of a guy'.

Posting a message through the No1Seems2Care Facebook group, they told how they received the devastating news.

The post read: "Genuinely heartbroken, sore, confused, hurt, scared and annoyed that this has happened to the most selfless guy in the world who we loved to bits and who loved us all to bits

"The world has lost a gem of a guy!

"I don’t know how or what we will do without him! I just don’t understand it all.

"Rest easy Davy, hope you know how much we love you and will miss you majorly. Our hearts are broken."

Clare Lindsay wrote: "So sorry for your loss he was a nice guy and always took time to stop and say hi to us he will be missed in street thoughts are with you and family."

Christopher Rowe wrote: "Shocked and saddened to hear of Davy's death -you and your family are in my prayers. If I can do anything to help please be in touch."

A joint investigation involving Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is currently under way as they probe the causes of the blaze.

Stephen Lanaghan, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s Group Commander for Glasgow City, said yesterday: “We were alerted at 12.22am on Tuesday, February 23 to reports of a fire at a residential property on Cathay Street, Glasgow.

“Operations Control mobilised four appliances to the scene where sadly, a man passed away.

“Our thoughts are very much with his family, friends and the wider community at this difficult time.”

Police said yesterday: "Police were called around 1.10am on Tuesday 23 February 2021.

"A joint investigation involving police and the Fire Service is under way to establish the circumstances of the fire. "
