Heartbroken family of tragic young Scots boxer set up mental health foundation to help others

The family of a young amateur boxer from Falkirk who died have set up a foundation to help others in his legacy.

Scott Martin, also known as Scotty Bhoy, passed away on New Year's Day at the age of 16 just days before his 17th birthday.

It's hoped 'The Scott Martin Foundation' will help raise awareness about mental health and suicide amongst young people.

His sudden death has left those who loved him heartbroken and they now want to encourage others who are struggling to speak out and get help.

Speaking to the Daily Record, his mum Samantha Redding, 41, said: "Delighted is a massive understatement. Since Scott left us I knew I had to do something not just to keep Scott's legacy alive - but to help other youths going through the same as Scott."

"The messages of support I received from other parents after Scott's passing with similar stories about their own kids and the lack of support really astonished me."

"I knew at that point I had to do something to raise awareness and help put some kind of support into place to help these kids. I know Scott knew me better than most so he would be supporting me and pushing me on to do this also.

"We'll be working in association with Scott's favourite place, Sparta Gym, where he trained and we'll be training all coaches on mental health and to help them recognise signs in kids.

"Private counselling will be on offer rather than them having to wait months on waiting lists.

"There's also going to be a safe room named Scott's Room. This will be used for counselling sessions."

Scott was an apprentice joiner with his dad and a talented top youth footballer who played for teams including Falkirk, Partick Thistle and Hearts.

A GoFundMe page was set up after his death, which has raised over £11,000.

The cash from that is going to be put into the foundation.

Samantha added: "Scott would love the fact all the money people have donated is being used hand in hand with Sparta as he really was at his best in the gym and in the ring.

"We’ve had support and donations from local companies already who really want to get onboard & support Scott's foundation so I have no doubt at all that this is going to be huge & make a massive impact."

"If we can help one child and one family from going through what we have then the work me, my family and our close friends have done since losing him will be well worth it. "
