'Heartbroken' AR Rahman shares his feelings about his divorce from Saira Banu: 'We had hoped to reach the grand thirty but...'

Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman and his wife Saira Banu are separating after nearly three decades of marriage, their lawyer Vandana Shah confirmed on Tuesday. The couple cited "significant emotional strain" as the reason for their decision.

In a heartfelt post on social media, Rahman shared his feelings about the separation. He tweeted, "We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter."

The musician's use of the hashtag 'arrsairaabreakup' has since raised eyebrows, with some fans asking the star to edit his post and remove the tag.

The couple, who married in 1995, are parents to three children – daughters Khatija and Raheema, and son Ameen.

In a joint statement released through their lawyer, Rahman and Banu said, "After many years of marriage, Saira and her husband A.R. Rahman have made the difficult decision to separate from each other. This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship. Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time."

Rahman’s son, Ameen, also addressed the separation on Instagram Stories, writing, "We kindly request everyone to respect our privacy during this time. Thank you for your understanding."

Meanwhile, the couple's daughters, Khatija and Raheema also took to their handles to share their reactions. Posting her dad's note, Raheema urged followers to “keep us in your prayers.” She also reposted a Tamil message emphasising the need for privacy, reminding everyone that "it's their personal issue."
