Heartbreaking tribute to homeless woman who died in Castle Park

A heartbreaking tribute to a homeless woman who died in 2017 has been left in Castle Park.

Deborah Morris was found dead in a tent in the park on May 28.

The 48-year-old was living in a high-support hostel for 10 months before her death.

A makeshift headstone paying tribute to Deborah Morris has now been left in the park in which she died.

The tribute reads: "R.I.P Deborah Morris. 1969 - 2017.

"Her body was found in a tent at this park. She was homeless. Remember her."

Earlier this year, Bristol has the third highest number of homeless deaths in the UK revealed that 17 homeless people died in Bristol in 2017, the same year as Deborah Morris.

The 17 people who died in Bristol accounted for approximately a third of homeless deaths across the entire of the South West.

Bristol also had the third highest number of deaths in England and Wales, alongside Lambeth and Liverpool, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Bristol has the third highest number of homeless deaths in the UK

Ben Humberstone, head of health and life events at the ONS, said at the time: “The findings show a real contrast between areas in terms of where homeless people are dying.

"Every one of these deaths is a real human tragedy and understanding where these deaths occur is particularly poignant.

"While the worst affected areas change from one year to the next, the figures show that the deprivation level of an area has a real impact."

In August 2018, Bristol Live  reported the names of  50 homeless people who had died in the city with little or no acknowledgement   - including Deborah Morris.

Through a Freedom of Information request submitted to Bristol City Council , it was revealed that 50 deaths of homeless people had been recorded by the authority.

The figures include not just those who died on the streets, but also homeless people who were using emergency accommodation such as shelters or direct access hostels.

The cause of death for Deborah Morris was unascertained.
