Heartbreaking photos show scene where man and two children tragically died after car entered the water at Quigley’s Point in Co Donegal

These pictures show the heartbreaking scene where a man and two children died after the car they were travelling in entered the water in Co Donegal.

The car was travelling from Muff towards Quigley's Point at around 10.20pm on Thursday night when the driver lost control and the vehicle skidded across the road and down an embankment and into the water.

A 49-year-old driver, as well as a 14-year-old boy and six-year-old girl were tragically killed.

A 45-year-old woman who was in the front passenger seat managed to get out of the car and raise the alarm for help.

She was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The bodies of the man and two children were taken from the water and brought to Letterkenny University Hospital where post-mortem examinations are due to be carried out.

Sinn Fein Donegal TDs Pádraig Mac Lochlainn and Pearse Doherty have expressed their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the man and two children who died on Thursday night after a road tragedy in the Quigley’s Point area of the Inishowen peninsula.

Mac Lochlainn said: “This is such a heartbreaking tragedy and myself and Pearse Doherty want to convey our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the man and two children who have died.

"The people of Inishowen and Donegal have suffered more than most from road tragedies over the years and we have no doubt that our people will do all that we can to support the devastated family at this terrible time and in the time ahead."

A garda spokesman said: “Gardaí in Buncrana were alerted to an incident of a car in the water at Three Trees, Quigleys Point, Donegal late last night, Thursday 20th August, 2020 at approximately 10.20p.m.

“A car was travelling from Muff towards Quigley's Point when the driver lost control and the vehicle skidded across the road and down the embankment and plunged into the water.

“The male driver (49 years) and two rear seat passengers, both children, one male (14 years) and a female (6 years) were fatally injured.

“The female (45 years) front seat passenger managed to exit the car and sought assistance.

“Gardaí are appealing for anyone who was travelling on the road from Muff towards Quigles's Point between 10p.m. and 10.30p.m. last night, 20th August, 2020 or anyone who was may have had sighting of a Black Mitsubishi ASX registration number, 11 DL 1566 in the area, particularly any road users with dash cam footage, to contact Buncrana Garda Station on (074) 9320540, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.”
