Heartbreaking moment dog tries to follow owner after being tied up and abandoned

A woman abandoned her dog by trying it up at a gate outside an animal shelter before cruelly driving off.

CCTV shows how the animal tries to break free from its leash after being left at the Hot Springs Animal Shelter in Arizona, USA, on Sunday.

Police say the woman left a note beside the dog but later returned with food and water for the unwanted pet.

The facility does not open until midday during weekdays and the animal had escaped by the time staff arrived for work.

Officers say the woman returned to the facility during the week and said that the dog had behaved aggressively towards her and her young daughter.

The dog remains in the care of the animal shelter as staff attempt to find a new home for it.

Hot Springs police sergeant Chris Lackey said leaving animals outside the shelter out-of-hours was a common occurance.

"People get desperate at certain times," he told local media.
