Heartbreaking footage shows man's caravan home and all belongings go up in flames on Scottish island

A man's caravan and all his possessions went up in flames despite the efforts of island firefighters to save it.

Damian Valenti's mobile home in Balisgate, Tobermory went up in smoke on February 27.

Flames shot out of gas bottles outside the caravan as firefighters and volunteers battled the afternoon blaze.

Fire and rescue teams from Craignure, Salen and Tobermory were called out to the fierce fire, which started when Mr Valenti, a roofer, was out at work on Thursday afternoon.

Now one of the volunteers who fought the fire has gone the extra mile to help Mr Valenti rebuild his home.

Firefighter James Campbell started a crowdfunding effort aimed at raising £6,000 on Friday.

Today the JustGiving appeal has topped £3,500, as islanders pledged their support.

James, a volunteer with the Craignure team, attended the blaze.

The 31-year-old said the caravan was well alight when the firefighters got there.

He added: "By the time we got there the whole roof was well alight, there was pretty much no saving it.

"Damian was working and got a call to say his caravan was on fire, he came down but there was nothing we could do.

"We were there for about five hours, we were trying to fight it as best we could.

"There were gas bottles outside and the gas ignited, forcing flames out of the gas bottles.

"We had to make sure it was safe."

The cause of the fire has still to be determined but Mr Campbell said: "We think it might have been his woodburning stove, he lit it before he went to work and an hour later he got the phone call."

Mr Valenti is believed to have moved to Mull from Glasgow over 20 years ago.

James added: "Setting up the fundraising was a spur of the moment thing but I have known Damian through work for quite a number of years.

"All his tools and everything were inside the caravan, so he has lost everything."

"I couldn't believe the response to the fundraising.

"Within 24 hours we had reached a third of the target and now it's over £3,500 and everybody wants to help.

"Lots of people are helping in different ways."

Tobermory binman Colin Morrison, who hit the headlines when he raised thousands of pounds for island charities from calendars of photos taken on his bin round, is one of many helping the cause.

He has donated a canvas print for auction and bidding has already reached £200.

Mr Valenti, who is currently staying at a friend's house, could not be contacted, but Mr Campbell said: "Damian said he was taken aback by the community's response and how much the community has stuck together to help him."
