Heartbreak for Sam Bennett as he's caught on the line in sprint finish at Tour de France

Sam Bennett was left heartbroken again after he was just beaten in a sprint finish today in the Tour de France.

For the second time in three days' racing, the Carrick-on-Suir sprinter has come agonisingly close to his first ever Tour de France stage win.

Ewan pipped Bennett on the line to win stage three of the race.

The Australian (Lotto-Soudal) appeared from nowhere in an incredible sprint to weave his way through a very busy bunch and pass Bennett (Deceuninck-Quick Step) just before the finish to clinch the stage honours.

Italian and European road race champion Giacomo Nizzolo (NTT) finished third.

If he picks up a stage victory, he'll become just the sixth Irish rider to do so - joining greats such as Sean Kelly, Stephen Roche as well as current rider Dan Martin.

A win would also see him join Shay Elliot as the second Irish star to win in a stage in the three grand tours - the Tour de France, the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España.
