Heartbreak for Kieran Molloy as dream Madison Square Garden fight called off at last minute

There was heartbreak for Kieran Molloy over the weekend as a dream fight at Madison Square Garden was called off at the last minute after his opponent tested positive for Covid-19.

The young Galway fighter impressed on his professional debut on the undercard of Josh Taylor v Jack Catterall in Glasgow back in February and is tipped to have a huge future ahead of him.

Molloy said he was "gutted" that his fight with Jonathan Ryan Burrs was cancelled, but is confident that he will be a world champion in the future.

He posted on Instagram: "As you will be aware my fight tonight has been called off as my opponent has covid. To say I am gutted would be an understatement.

"I am in the best shape I have ever been in and I was looking forward to showing the world in @thegarden that I will be a World Champion one day.

"I would like to thank everyone who have traveled from Ireland & all over America to support me. It is so appreciated. To my sponsors who have been amazing support on my journey.

He added: "To my team @toprank @conlanboxing my coach @angel_boxeo and team thank you for all you do for me. In my eyes Angel is the best coach in world boxing.

"We will focus on the future and use this episode to become stronger as a boxer & person going forward. Thank you all, the journey continues."

The 23-year-old is signed to Top Rank, managed by Conlan Boxing and coached by Angel Fernandez, who now also trains Anthony Joshua.

Molloy could fight on the undercard of Michael Conlan's bout with Miguel Marriaga at Belfast's SSE Arena in August.
