Heartbreak for Hearts duo after Northern Ireland fall short in their Euro 2020 qualification dream

It was heartbreak for Hearts duo Liam Boyce and Michael Smith as Northern Ireland fell just short in their quest for Euro 2020 qualification.

The Tynecastle duo were both involved as Ian Baraclough's men lost 2-1 to Slovakia at Windsor Park in their play-off final match.

Juraj Kucka put the visitors ahead in the first half but Northern Ireland managed to force extra time after a late Milan Skriniar own goal levelled the scores.

However the Slovakian side won the match in 110 minutes when Michal Duris netted.

Boyce came off the bench just before Northern Ireland levelled the scores in the second half. His Hearts teammate Michael Smith was an unused substitute.

Former Jambos striker Conor Washington started the match in attack, while Steven Davis and Niall McGinn of Rangers and Aberdeen respectively also played.

Northern Ireland are next in action on Sunday when they face Austria in the Nations League.
