Heartbreak as two Cork crash victims named locally after horror incident on Irish roads

The victims of a horror crash between a car and a motorcyclist have been named locally.

The tragic incident occurred at around 2pm on Thursday afternoon in Cork.

A car and a motorcycle collided on the N20, in Rathgoggin North, Charleville tragically killing two men.

They have since been named locally as Michael McCarthy, 20, who was driving the motorcycle at the time and 73-year-old Peter Hefferan who was driving the car.

Mr McCarthy from Batt Donegan Place in Charleville, Cork and Heffernan from Dromcollogher in Co Limerick were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardai yesterday shut off the road and put diversions in place and are now appealing for witnesses to the tragic incident.

A Garda Forensic Crash Investigator arrived at the scene to carry out an investigation while a Garda PSV inspector also began an examination of both vehicles involved in the crash.

A Garda spokesman said: "Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. They are also appealing for any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam), who were travelling in the area between 1.30p.m. - 3p.m. to make this footage available to Gardaí.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Mallow Garda Station on 022 31450, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station."
