'Heartbreak' as PlayWorks charity in St Ann's closes

A charity in St Ann's has closed due to a lack of funding.

PlayWorks, which was based in Alfred Street North, helped to train people work with children, such as at play groups, and also organised play sessions for youngsters.

However, the charity announced it was closing on March 20.

"We would like to thank all our members and friends for all your support over the years, and wish you the very best for the future," a PlayWorks statement read.

According to people who used its services, PlayWorks organised creative play sessions for children and also encouraged play between children and adults.

The charity said funding from the city council was cut seven years ago it had been working hard to find vital money in the proceeding years.

Despite managing to source money from "external funders" and raising income in "innovative ways" since, the charity said its financial situation had deteriorated.

The Facebook announcement was met with widespread sadness.

Ruth Parsons wrote: "This has broken my heart! PlayWorks has been a massive part of my life.

"And I thank everyone who I have worked with, trained with and laughed with over these many years!

"All the best for you all."

Amy Bicer added: "This is such sad and tragic news. My children and myself have gained so much from you guys so thank you so much."

Another woman wrote: "This is shocking - a wonderful resource Nottingham has benefited from immensely."

"Very sorry to hear this, not good news for Nottingham, and I hope that all the staff find new roles soon," another woman added.

A statement issued on behalf of the trustees of Nottingham Play Forum read: "After more than 40 years of working to support, promote and celebrate children’s play in Nottingham we are extremely sad to announce that Nottingham Play Forum, known to many as PlayWorks, is now closing down.

"In 2012 financial support to us from the local authority was ended.

"Since then we have tried everything to find other sources of funding that would let us carry on serving children and play providers.

"For seven years the dedication, commitment and imagination of our staff and volunteers has kept us going and we managed to get sufficient grants from external funders as well as raise income in a variety of innovative ways that befit a ‘playful’ organisation.

"Thanks to the passion and energy of our team we have achieved many fabulous things and touched many lives.

"Celebrate Play, the revitalised and magnificent National Playday event, is just one example among many.

"However, competition for funding from all sources has never been more intense and our financial situation has deteriorated further.

"Our trustees now have no choice other than to accept that we cannot continue to operate and must close our doors and wind down the charity.

"It is with deep regret that we have to say goodbye to the wonderful people who have been part of this amazing organisation. We know that they are losing a great deal.

"A livelihood, friendships and the sense of shared purpose, but also the chance to carry on being part of something really special.

"We also believe that Nottingham is losing more than just another charity.

"Nottingham Play Forum has been a central part of a movement that is passionate about making sure that the child’s right to play is protected and resourced.

"Nottingham’s play sector has in the past been seen as a leader nationally.

"As is usually the case during times of austerity, those without a voice, in this case children, lose the most."
