Heartbreak as man dies in tragic Leeds tower block fire

A man has died following a tragic flat fire.

At around 10am on Saturday, April 15, West Yorkshire Police were called by the fire service who were at the scene of a fire at a flat in Clyde Grange, Wortley, Leeds. The occupant of the flat, a 59-year-old man, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Enquiries took place to establish the cause and found no suspicious circumstances. Reports suggest the fire took place on the building's 11th floor.

The Coroner's Office has been informed.

In a statement, a spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "At 10:01am on Saturday, police were contacted the fire service who were attending a fire at a flat in Clyde Grange, Leeds.

"The occupant of the flat, a 59-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Enquiries establish there were no suspicious circumstances and the Coroner’s Office has been informed."

A statement issued by Armley Labour councillors Alice Smart, Jim McKenna, and Labour MP Rachel Reeves read:

"The Armley Labour team are devastated that someone has lost their life following a fire in a flat in the Clyde Grange tower block. There is an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the fire, but our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic loss as well as with all the high rise tenants in our community who may be concerned about their own safety.

“Since the Grenfell fire in 2017, we have lobbied for change for those living in high rise blocks in Armley so that everyone is safe. Everyone deserves to be safe in their own home. We will continue to work with tenants to secure the essential fire safety measures needed to keep people safe."
