Heartbreak as man dies after being hit by Metro train in North Tyneside

A man has died after being hit by a Metro train on Saturday morning.

The incident happened at Shiremoor, in North Tyneside, at around 5.30am.

Police are now working to identify the man and trace his next of kin.

However, officers are not treating the death as suspicious.

Trains were halted between Benton and Monkseaton in both directions following the incident, and commuters were told that Arriva buses would be accepting Metro tickets.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "At 5.30am this morning police received a report of a male being involved in a collision with a Metro at Shiremoor.

"Emergency services attended and the male has since passed away.

"Enquiries are ongoing to identify the man and trace his next of kin.

"There is not believed to be any third party involvement and a report is being prepared for the coroner."

Tyne and Wear Metro tweeted: "Due to a police incident in the Shiremoor area we have no trains running between Benton and Monkseaton in both directions.

"Ticket acceptance has been arranged on Arriva services 51,54 and 55 in the affected area. Metro apologise for the inconvenience caused."
