Heartbreak as man, 38, dies 3 weeks after marrying love of his life in hospice ceremony

Tributes have been paid to a "brave and amazing" man who tragically died aged just 38, three weeks after marrying the love of his life in a hospice ceremony.

Brave Simon Stevens passed away at the Marie Curie Hospice in Solihull last night on Sunday with his wife Lynne and mum Julie by his bedside.

A message on a GoFundMe fundraising page set up on behalf of the Jaguar Land Rover worker announced the tragic news, reports Birmingham Live.

Ruth Price, who set up the fundraising page posted: "Simon fell asleep peacefully yesterday evening with Lynne and his mum Julie by his side. "He was just 38 years old. He will be deeply missed but his legacy will live on.

"My love and thoughts go to his family and friends. XxxxxX I’m truly heartbroken at losing an amazing friend. So brave and strong to the end x sleep tight Simon x"

Simon tied the knot with Lynne Male at a special ceremony at Marie Curie Hospice, Solihull, on October 26.

Immediate family and best man Iain Prior watched on as the devoted couple from Yardley Wood exchanged vows and rings.

Simon died from peritoneal mesothelioma which is caused by exposure to asbestos.

The RAF veteran became ill in January and was diagnosed with the devastating disease in March.

He was cared for at Marie Curie Hospice with Lynne a constant by his side.

Last week Lynne said: "Simon was just a very fit and healthy man who became ill overnight. It was totally devastating.

"We have been together 14-and-a-half years. The wedding was originally planned to take place on October 28 but Simon became suddenly more ill on the Tuesday afternoon and the wedding was turned around in about four hours.

"It was special having our immediate family there. We exchanged vows and rings."

The couple have a passion for greyhounds and have three of their own which have been adopted from rescue centre Daybreaks Trust in Solihull.

Simon and Lynne have been regular volunteers at Daybreaks.

Simon helped with the maintenance at the rescue centre as well as numerous other tasks.

The couple have already helped to raise over £1,000 for Daybreaks by organising two online dog show and helping with a 2022 Daybreaks calendar.

A fundraising campaign was by Ruth Price, founder of Daybreaks, on Simon's behalf.

His wish was to raise money for the group which will go towards purchasing premises as the current site is rented.

So far over £11,600 has been raised. To view or donate to the fundraising page click here.

Posting on the Justgiving site, Ruth said: "Simon requested that we set up a fundraiser in his name.

"The aim being to raise money to go towards helping future proof and secure the kennels in years to come.

"Daybreaks Trust and Kennels have been an important part of Simon's life - a place Simon said gave him 'a purpose in life'.

"The kennels are currently rented. Simon's wishes are for Daybreaks Trust to eventually own the site which would secure its future forever.

"This would mean that we can continue to rehome greyhounds, in turn changing the lives of not only the dogs and those who adopt but all the volunteers who are part of our Daybreaks Family.

"This will be a true legacy."
