Heartbreak as Derry girl passes away aged 11 while waiting on heart transplant

A young Irish girl who was the face of an organ donation campaign has passed away while waiting on a heart transplant.

Little Aimee Brady spent her last 10 months in the Clark Clinic awaiting an organ donor, but tragically never got the call she and her family so desperately needed.

The Derry girl, 11, was praised by the Children's Heartbeat Trust for her efforts in raising awareness on the impact of organ donation.

A spokesperson for the Trust released a statement on Thursday morning expressing their heartbreak at the news, Belfast Live reports.

It read: "We don't normally post about our wonderful heart heroes who sadly pass away out of respect for each family's privacy, but following her efforts raising awareness of the impact of organ donation, and with permission from her family we are very sad to say that yesterday 11-year-old Aimee Brady passed away.

"Aimee was one of the bravest, funniest and sassiest girls we had the honour of knowing. She was a great friend to us here at CHT, starring in our 2015 awareness campaign, launching the Children's Heart Centre with Sir Rory Best earlier this summer and in September raising crucial awareness of the need for organ donation in a very powerful BBC interview which received one of the highest response rates and views that BBC NI have ever had.

"Always ready with a cheeky smile and joke, Aimee was a light in the lives of all who knew her and her impact has been felt further afield with well-wishers contacting her and her family from around the world.

"We will all miss her so much and send our deepest condolences to Valerie, Stephen, Taylor and their extended family on the loss of such an inspirational daughter, sister and heart hero.

"If you do one thing today in Aimee's memory please sign up to the organ donation register at www.organdonationni.info and talk to your family about your wishes. The gift of organ donation really can make all the difference."
