Heartbreak as cherished dad dies aged 40 just days after marrying wife

Tributes have been paid to a much-loved dad who died after a short battle with cancer.

Jamie Christie passed away one month after being diagnosed with the illness.

The 40-year-old had just enough time to marry the love of his life, Sophie, only a few days before his passing.

Friends who have been left shattered by the news have rallied around Jamie’s family, especially his new wife Sophie and 8-year-old son Dudley.

Lee Gibb, who has set up a Go Fund Me page to cover the cost of Jamie’s funeral said his friend had a profound impact on his life.

“I was devastated when I heard the news Jamie had passed,” said Lee. “I’ve known him since we were young when we played football together and it really hurts that he’s not with us anymore.

“It’s a horrible situation and the community really wanted to help Jamie’s family out in their time of need.

“Jamie’s no longer here to support his wife and son so we’re here to look after them. We have a duty to him to look after them.”

Jamie, from Scunthorpe, passed away on Friday November 12, after being bed bound for six days.

Lee told Scunthorpe Live: “The last thing his family need is to think about finances at this time.

“His son Dudley only found out about his dad’s passing recently and I can’t imagine what he’s going through.

“I have a six year-old kid at home so it really brings it home. You just have to feel for the family. The whole community is with them.”

Jamie only married his wife Sophie on Wednesday November 3 - just over a week before he passed away.

Lee said: “It was a fantastic day when he got married. To see him smile despite his pain was the best feeling you’ll ever see.

“We’d only been at his wedding a week before his passing which is heartbreaking. We were told he’d have another two to eight weeks but it was much quicker than that unfortunately.

“He was bed bound from Saturday November 6. I think he kept himself going for the wedding - especially for his wife and child.”

Jamie had a profound impact on the lives of the people that knew him.

Lee added: “It’s not just my life that Jamie impacted. If you look on social media, there’s floods of tributes to him.

“Jamie was a big friendly giant with a heart of gold. He was very competitive as a person, but at the core, he was always one of the lads.

“He helped people connect through sport and all the good work he did. I’ve never seen the raw emotion pour out to the loss of one individual."

Jamie had only married Sophie on the Wednesday before his passing with help from Scunthorpe Rugby Union Football Club.

Lee said: “He loved sports and whatever sport he played, he did it well. He boxed, played rugby and played pool.

“The rugby club helped get the day sorted for Jamie and Sophie."

Jamie worked at British Steel who placed their flags at half-mast on Monday November 15.

He will be cherished and missed by all his family including brother Damon, his sister in law Megan, his friend Shane, his auntie Karen, his cousin Emma and Karl, and god son Reece.

The family would also like to add their sincere thanks to Avast, Scunthorpe Rugby Union Football Club, The Scunthorpe Tuesday Pool League, and Alan Comerford.

“He was a true gentleman in every respect he will be deeply missed.

“Sleep well brother. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.”
