Heartbreak as border collie found collapsed in East Lothian layby is put to sleep

A stray Border Collie had to be put to sleep after being found collapsed in an East Lothian layby.

The Scottish SPCA were were called to pick the dog up from the B1377, between East Linton and North Berwick, on Wednesday (13 May).

The animal was found with a wound to his back end which had a 'fly strike' and maggot infestation. After being taken to the vet the decision was made to put him to sleep due to the amount he was suffering.

The Scottish SPCA are now trying to identify those responsible for abandoning him, and want anyone with information to come forward.

Inspector Emma Phillips said “The male dog was found collapsed with a wound to his back end.

“He had fly strike and a maggot infestation in the open wound.

“We immediately took him for veterinary attention but the poor boy was suffering so much that the vet made the difficult decision to put him to sleep.

“He was black and white, overweight, and had a green slip collar on. We are hoping someone recognises him as we are keen to speak to the people responsible for the condition he was found in.

“If anyone has any information about who the dog belonged to or how he was abandoned in this way, please contact our animal helpline on 03000 999 999. Calls can be treated confidentially.”

Those at the Scottish SPCA are keen to remind people that abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006, and anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.
