Heartbreak after death of 'larger than life' Stockport solicitor Peter Gorvin who would 'help anyone out'

A ‘generous’ and ‘larger than life’ Stockport solicitor who helped set up a blind golf tournament has died.

Peter Gorvin, founder of Gorvin’s Solicitors, passed away at the age of 77 on Friday, October 29.

Throughout his life, Peter, from Romiley, divided his time between work, supporting community projects — and his 50-year-long passion for horse racing.

Paying tribute, Peter's son Mike said his dad ‘fitted a lot in right until the end’.

Mike told the Manchester Evening News: “He had a lot of involvement in charity here. He set up the British Blind Golf championships, which was at Bramhall at one point.”

Speaking to the M.E.N. in 2005, Peter himself explained he decided to set up the blind golf tournament after meeting blind England international golfer Peter Hodgkinson at Bramhall Golf Club in Stockport.

"I guided Peter when he was runner-up in the World Championships in 1991. It got me interested in blind golf. So we started off a small competition, and it grew into the British Blind Golf Championship," he explained.

And, the golf championships were not the only example of his father's charitable spirit, Mike added.

“He was very generous in his time and used to help anyone out. There are many, many people in the business world, and friends, who he would help out,” he said.

“He was a larger than life character, and he was well known for his laugh. You knew if he was in the building.

“He certainly brought life into the room. He lived his life to the full.”

Peter set up his law firm back in 1972, with only two members of staff.

Now, the company boasts more than 100 staff and 16 partners, and is still headquartered in Stockport town centre.

Mike said the firm’s name adorned a swathe of Stockport institutions during his youth.

“I remember, as a teenager, you could not get in a taxi without our name on it,” he said.

“It used to be on the stands at Edgeley Park.”

Peter retired from the business around 20 years ago, and decided to spend more of his time trending to his interest in horse racing — where he had a ‘big influence’, according to Mike.

Peter Gorvin, founder of Gorvin’s Solicitors, passed away at the age of 77 on Friday, October 29. He is survived by his wife Val, four children, and two grandchildren.
