Heart-stopping moment driver overtakes lorry and veers into oncoming traffic on Scots road

A heart-stopping video captured the moment a reckless driver tried to overtake a tanker on the A82 and veered onto the wrong side of the carriageway towards oncoming traffic.

The video shows a black Ford tailgating a tanker and braking several times as it prepares to overtake. The vehicle then speeds up, overtakes the tanker and veers off onto the other side of the carriageway.

AN HGC driver travelling southbound towards the reckless motorist flashes his lights, and slows down as the car continues head-on towards the lorry.

The car is then seen braking and slowing down almost to a halt, then pulling towards a grass verge as the vehicles approach each other.

No one was injured in the hair-raising incident but the outcome could have been different had motorists not reacted quickly.

Kevan Whitelaw, who caught the shocking moment on his dashcam, said four elderly people were in the vehicle, which attempted to pass a lorry near the junction of the A817 Garelochhead road on Friday, January 13.

Speaking to the Record, he said: "I was so shocked, I couldn't believe it. I was concerned for the four elderly people in the car. Thankfully it wasn't dark and the oncoming traffic reacted.

"I don't understand why the car didn't overtake the tanker before, there were plenty of opportunities."

Lorry driver Archie Miller, who took evasive action when the rogue vehicle drove towards him on the wrong side of the road said: "The auld boy in the car was a bit confused. Good job one of us was paying attention."

The video has now racked up more than 11,000 views on Facebook, and people were quick to voice their thoughts on the reckless road-user.

Kenny MacLaurin said: "Lost count of the amount of deaths on the A82, between Dumbarton to the top of Loch Lomond."

Mark Miller wrote: "This is insane. I dread to think what could have happened if the lorry driver wasn’t on the ball. The driver should have their licence taken off them immediately. Every day you hear about fatalities on our roads and with lunacy like this it’s no wonder.

Richard Skell Hobson said: "Some people really shouldn’t be on the road."

Police Scotland said an inspector at the Road Policing Unit in Dumbarton was making enquiries into the incident, but at this stage there was no official report made to police.
