Heart-stopping moment bus driver saves teenager from being killed by passing car

A quick-thinking bus driver has been branded a hero after she stopped a teenager stepping into the path of an oncoming car.

Footage released from a vehicle driven by Samantha Call shows her grab the boy's hoodie as he's about to get off the bus.

The clip shows a car speed past seconds later.

After a brief pause, he then continued to disembark in New York.

The video was shared on Facebook by the Norwich City School District, with the driver of the car criticised.

A caption alongside the video said: “This is exactly why you should NEVER pass a school bus when the stop arm is out and the red lights are flashing.

“[Call stopped] a student just short of disaster, grabbing the boy from behind as a car whizzes by the open school bus doors.”

And district transportation supervisor William Loomis was full of praise for the driver.

He wrote: “All of our drivers undergo continuous training so they’re prepared to handle situations like this.

“We hope this video helps everyone to realize the dangers of passing a stopped school bus.”

According to a report in New York Upstate, Loomis told Ms Call that the boy was bale to go home "because of you".

After seeing the footage he said the boy's family were "very emotional", saying: "It was very alarming for them to see how close this was to being a tragedy."

Efforts to trace the driver have so far proved fruitless.
