Heart-stopping moment boy, 5, is hit by car while crossing busy four-lane road

A young boy narrowly avoided death after being mowed down by a car while dangerously crossing a busy road.

Heart-stopping CCTV footage shows the five-year-old boy crossing a four-lane road as a 4x4 narrowly avoids hitting him before he reaches a traffic island in the middle.

He then carries on running before being struck by a black car.

The driver, 46, told Channel 7 News that the boy appeared to have hit his head on front of the bonnet at the moment of impact.

She says she quickly got out of her car and rushed to check for injuries.

In the footage, onlookers can also be seen helping the boy off the road.

The boy was was found to have sustained minor injuries, a South Australia Police spokesperson said.

He was taken to Flinders Medical Centre where he was treated for an injured ankle and lost toe nail.

According to reports, the boy had become lost from his family after taking off ahead of them.

His family went into a shop and the boy panicked when he was not sure where they were.

Police confirmed the driver was passing through a green traffic light at the time of the crash.
