Heart-stopping moment baby koala is dropped during dramatic rescue in Australia on This Morning

This is the astonishing moment a baby koala nearly fell to the floor after tumbling out of the arms of its mother during a rescue in Australia.

The footage - which you can watch above - was shown on This Morning while the programme aired a segment about the harrowing bushfires currently ravaging the country.

The mum can be heard in distress and calling out while the rescue team try to gently pull her and her baby away from a burnt out tree.

While successfully separating the mother from the branch, rescuers try keep the pair safe in their arms.

But clearly stressed out by what's going on around her, the mother koala bear lets out a cry as she feels her clinging baby accidentally fall away from her.

Luckily, one member of the rescue team was quick on his feet and caught the tiny baby before any real harm could be done.

The footage then showed the mother and baby being put into care, with army vets treating the mother's burns with cream and bandages.

Viewers watching from home were also left emotional during the dramatic footage.

Geordie Claire posted on Twitter: "Omg crying my eyes out watching #ThisMorning @drscottym in Australia rescuing koalas..it's devastating..that mum and baby."

Aimee also put: "In tears watching @thismorning and the mummy koala and her baby being rescued ... she just wants to protect her baby poor things."

" @thismorning the koala and its baby up the tree has brought me to tears," another added.

It comes after catastrophic fires continue to ruin thousands of acres of land and wildlife across Australia, with little sign of an end to it.

There are already fears that vast numbers of animals will become endangered due to the bushfires, including the country's iconic koala bear.

Fire chief Mick Clarke says: “It will take 100 years to get back to where we were before the fires.”
