Heart-stopping footage shows a Dutch cyclist just inches away from being struck by a train at an unguarded level crossing in the Netherlands.

The shocking video was released on social media by rail authority ProRail to remind people of the dangers of level crossings.

CCTV shows the cyclist waiting at a level crossing while a train passes. After it does, the cyclist begins moving towards the middle of the tracks without noticing another oncoming train.

The tense moments that follow show the male cyclist urgently pushing himself off the tracks before coming inches away from being struck by the double-decker train.

Speaking to Cycling Weekly after posting the footage, Geert Vlogman of ProRail said: “As well as deaths, there are more than a hundred near-misses annually.

“If only people knew how often this almost goes wrong and what the consequences are for train drivers, guards, first responders, aid workers and survivors if things do go wrong – it’s hard to imagine people thinking that way.”

Mr Vlogman decides which measures need to be taken to prevent further deaths at level crossings across the Netherlands.
