Hearing to recover £25k from Natalie McGarry postponed as former Glasgow MP appeals conviction

A hearing to recover almost £25,000 ex-MP Natalie McGarry was postponed today to await an appeal against her conviction.

McGarry, 41, was jailed for two years at Glasgow Sheriff Court in June this year. She was found guilty of taking £19,974 while treasurer of Women for Independence.

McGarry also embezzled further £4,661 while treasurer, secretary and convener of the Glasgow Regional Association of the SNP. McGarry - who denied the accusations - had been the MP for Glasgow East between 2015 and 2017.

A proceeds of crime hearing where prosecutors are looking to recover the full amount was adjourned. McGarry's attendance was excused.

Her lawyer Pat Campbell said: "You will be aware of the intention of an appeal against sentence and conviction. Against that background, I invite to continue this hearing for two months to allow the outcome of these proceedings."

Prosecutor Darren Harty agreed with a joint motion to continue the hearing.

He said: "My instructions from the proceeds of crime unit is to continue this matter for four weeks but that's slightly optimistic to allow the appeal to be lodged if Miss McGarry will be continuing with that appeal."

Sheriff Barry Divers continued the matter until October.
