The NSW government's funding for cultural institutions including its proposal for the Powerhouse Museum will be examined by a parliamentary committee.
The NSW upper house committee's fourth and final public hearing on Thursday will look into how the state allocates funding for cultural projects.
It comes after the state government's controversial decision to move Sydney's Powerhouse Museum to Parramatta was overturned five years after it was first announced.
The government had planned to sell the Ultimo site for up to $195 million and use the funds to help relocate the industrial science museum, which was slated to cost between $420 million and $645 million.
But in July Premier Gladys Berejiklian described a similar museum to be built in Western Sydney as the "jewel in the crown" for the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences.
The committee's chair, Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party MP Robert Borsak, said the contentious proposal has been dogged by serious concerns and opposition from museums experts and community groups.
"Regrettably, there has been an agenda to cast such opposition as an ideological battle between so-called 'cultural elitists' of the inner ring and advocates for western Sydney," he said in a statement.
"Now, as the government's revised plans progress through environmental assessment, there are still many unanswered questions.'"
