Heard a loud bang last night? This is what caused it

Military training was behind a series of loud noises many Canberrans reported hearing on Sunday night.

Social media quickly filled up on Sunday night with scores of residents from Woden to Belconnen and across the border in Queanbeyan and Sutton, reporting hearing several loud 'bangs' at various intervals around 11pm Sunday night.

Military training simulating a battleground at the Majura Training Area was the cause of the noise, a Defence spokeswoman has confirmed.

"During the conduct of this training on Friday and Sunday evening, Battlefield Noise Simulation was used, which resulted in several loud noises," she said.

She said realistic training was essential for Army cadets at the Royal Military College Duntroon.

The loud bangs, which have been heard several times in the past few months, have often been attributed to military training at Majura.

The spokeswoman said training would be undertaken again this month and may cause more loud noises.
