Hear the roar as fans finally return to bring St James' Park back to life after 15 months away

For over a year, the stands at St James' Park have lain silent.

But on Wednesday night they were brought back to life with the voices of 10,000 supporters.

The roar of Geordies cheering on their team is bound to stir any Toon fan's heart, and now it has finally been heard again as the home ground reopened for the first time since lockdown.

Fans haven't been inside since February 29 last year, and those lucky enough to get a ticket this week made their joy at being back clear.

Supporters returned in their droves to cheer on the team as they faced Sheffield United.

With all-important social-distancing rules still in place, the crowd couldn't be as large as usual, but with their voices raised together in a cheer, those inside could still fill Newcastle's city centre with noise.

We captured those historic first roars in our video, above, and you can hear the delight in every voice as people were once again able to come together, united by their love for their team.

Although matches have been going on since last summer, the return of fans is set to bring the lifeblood back to the ground, which has been hosting fans since the 1880s, and marks another symbolic step back towards something more like normality.
