Hear Mark Knopfler's NEW Local Hero ahead of the Virtual Great North Run

It's become the soundtrack to the world's most-famous half marathon but now Mark Knopfler's Local Hero, like the Great North Run itself, will be just a bit different this year.

As runners take to the streets to take part in the first, and presumably last, virtual version of the Newcastle to South Shields run, they will get to listen to a fresh version of its adopted anthem.

Knopfler has created a new arrangement for Going Home, the theme of Local Hero, especially for the soundtrack which will accompany the 16,000 participants due to take part in this Sunday's Virtual Great North Run.

They will hear the Dire Straits frontman perform it via the viRACE app which runners will download for the event and which also will feature familiar Great North Run sounds, such as the motivating warm-up and Red Arrows fly-past with the addition of words of encouragement recorded by famous names.

Local Hero has become synonymous with the Great North Run and is the first song heard by runners when the starting gun is fired.

TV viewers also will get a chance to hear it this September 13 as a special performance from Mark Knopfler will be shown as part of an official programme, A Great North Run Celebration, being shown at 10.30am on BBC1.

The Chronicle will be covering Sunday's virtual event so, to be in with a chance to appear in our piece, share your photos and experiences with us on Twitter @whatsonne or @barbarahodgson5 or by emailing barbara.hodgson@reachplc.com
