Hear Local Hero at Great North Run as musicians prepare to serenade runners at the Tyne Bridge

It's a rousing song and one set to capture the mood for the thousands of runners crossing the Tyne Bridge at the start of the Great North Run.

When the first strains of Local Hero struck up, the title of North East star's Mark Knopfler famous anthem also summed up the fund-raising runners themselves who are making such a huge contribution to charity with their half-marathon challenge.

And Newcastle All Stars were out to bring a smile to the face as, before the race start, they practised the track which the Dire Straits' star himself played at a Great North Run opening ceremony in 2014, the year he re-recorded it as a charity single for his home city's event.

Earlier in the day, a few occasional cars were allowed over the Tyne Bridge before it closed in readiness for the surge of runners who make up the iconic centrepiece image each year.

But even then Newcastle was already buzzing with people, clad in their running gear and trainers, who filled up the coffee shops and mingled in the sun which turned out early to welcome them before they headed up Northumberland Street towards the start line.
