Healthcare assistant went to move her car after drinking at Moss Side party - and crashed twice

A young woman crashed her car into two parked vehicles in Moss Side after drinking at a party, a court heard.

Tammy Leach, 23, was more than double the drink-drive limit when she drove her Renault Clio on Fairman Street.

The health care assistant, from Preston, was moving the car to a different parking spot when she collided with two parked vehicles.

She had been drinking at a party earlier that evening, Manchester Magistrates Court heard.

Police officers saw the incident and arrested Leach as she told them: "I should not have drunk and drove".

She provided a positive breath test which was recorded at 79 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath - the legal limit is 35.

Leach has now been banned from driving for 17 months.

Prosecutor Nabila Choudhury told the court how officers spotted Leach's car at around 11.30pm on July 26 this year.

"Police officers were in an unmarked police vehicle when they observed the defendant's vehicle driving along Fairman Street in Moss Side", she said.

"The defendant collided with two stationary parked vehicles. The Clio drove by the defendant moved forward and hit a car, it then continued forward and hit another car.

"The officers went over to the defendant and she said 'I should not have drunk and drove'.

"She as then taken to the station and provided two samples of breath.

"The lowest was 79 microgrammes in breath".

Defending, Claire Parrot said her client - who has no previous convictions - was 'extremely upset' about the incident.

She said the defendant had been driving for just over three years and was a 'cautious driver' who had 'never done anything like this before'.

"She was in Manchester overnight, she had been at a party in the Manchester area and then gone back with friends to Moss Side", Ms Parrot told the court.

"Where she was parked in Moss Side, someone had their car stolen so she wanted to move her car into a different position.

"She said she took the chance believing that she was fairly sober.

"She thinks when she has been overly cautious on one side that is when she has hit the cars on the other side.

"She has had the same role as a senior health care assistant at the Royal Preston Hospital for five years now.

"She is a single mum and lives on her own. She really wishes now she had left the car.

Leach, of Ribbleton, pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level was above the limit.

Sentencing, Manchester JPs said they 'could see Leach was upset' and would impose the the shortest driving ban possible.

She was handed a 17-month driving ban and fined £398.
